Love is bittersweet

Feb. 14, 2020
Eros symbolizes love in Greek mythology. The author and professor of literature Anne Carson believes that Eros, aka love, is by definition sweet and bitter and consists of an inseparable combination of pleasure and pain. In the book Eros: The Bittersweet, Carson studies how love is described in classical literature. A Greek epigram, or short poem, which she mentions reads as follows:

If you love me, you hate me. And if you hate me, you love me.
Now if you don’t hate me, beloved, don’t love me.
