Change Makers: Liam Hannon is the cool teen delivering lunch to Boston’s homeless
WONKedition's interview series Change Makers spotlights the Gen Z stars taking action to change the world.
Who are you?
Hi. I'm Liam Hannon. I am 13 years old and I live in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I am the founder of Liam's Lunches of Love.
What’s Liam's Lunches of Love?
Liam's Lunches of Love is a service project in which I make and deliver lunches to people experiencing homelessness. I go out every Sunday and make about 100 lunches for my friends on the street. I do this because I believe that everyone deserves a little kindness in their lives.
Why did you start Liam's Lunches of Love?
I started Liam's Lunches of Love because one Summer I didn't want to go to camp. My dad told me that I couldn't just sit around all day and do nothing so we found a treasure hunt website called BrainChase in which you have to do academic and productive challenges to get clues. I chose Service as one of my challenges and the first week it said to do something for people experiencing homelessness. My dad thought that we should rent a food truck and go all across Cambridge and Boston to hand out food. I said to him, "Dad there are people right outside our building why don't we make them lunch?" So that week we went out and made 20 lunches and gave them away to people in need. At first I was pretty scared because I didn't know how people would react to me giving them a lunch. They all were super grateful and after we were done I asked my dad if we could do it again. He asked me why and I said "Because it felt really good to help people.” That is how Liam's Lunches of Love started.
Where do you see yourself and Liam's Lunches of Loveone year from now?
I see Liam's Lunches of Love in a year as being even bigger where we could even go out twice a week and do even more lunches. I hope that in a year I am able to help more people in different ways and also be an even better actor because I love musical theater.
